Approach

1. to come near to somebody/something in distance or time

(물건·장소 등에) 가까이 가다[오다], 다가가다[오다], 접근하다(come or go near to)

- We heard the sound of an approaching combat plane slowly.

(우리는 점점 다가오는 전투기의 소리를 들었다.)

- Public transport, especially bus is fast approaching when we go somewhere. We call it Murphy’s law.

(우리가 급히 어딘가로 가야 할 때면, 특히 버스 같은 대중교통은 빠르게 다가온다. 이것을 머피의 법칙이라고 부른다.)

2. to come near to condition

(성질·때·상태 등이) …에 가깝다, 근접하다, 육박하다(become more like)

- The Mona Lisa is the one of the paintings that approach perfection.

(모나리자는 완벽에 가까운 작품 중에 하나이다.)

- The research team for environment improvement discovered the new material that approached the most hardest thing.

(그 환경개선을 위한 연구팀은 가장 단단한 것에 가까운 새로운 물질을 발견했다.)

3. to speak to somebody about something, especially to ask them for something or to offer to do something

(교섭할 목적으로 남과) 접촉하다, 이야기를 꺼내다, 교섭을 시작하다(make advances to)

- We have been approached by a number of companies that are interested in our product.

(우리는 우리의 상품에 관심 있는 몇몇의 회사들에 의해 접촉 받았다.(제안 받았다.)

- They have to approach him for escaping the jail

(그들은 그 감옥을 탈출하기 위해서 반드시 그와 접촉해야 한다.)

- We didn’t have any idea when the community will approach Mafia with the new plan of robbing a bank.

(그 조직이 새로운 은행강도 계획을 가지고 마피아와 접근할지 우리는 도무지 감을 잡지 못했다.)

- We should definitely approach him about the time extension.

(우리는 기한 연장에 대해 그와 확실히 교섭해야 한다,)

4. to start dealing with a problem, task, etc. in a particular way

(문제·일 등에) 착수하다, 다루기 시작하다(set about)

- Always approaching a new project is so difficult.

(새로운 프로젝트에 착수하는 것은 매우 어렵다.)

- We approach the problem from a new angle.

(우리는 새로운 각도에서 그 문제를 다룬다.)
